There are over 200 types of cancer. The most common are lung, bladder, breast, prostate, kidney, ovarian, pancreatic, endometrial and colorectal cancers, as well as melanoma and leukemia.
Most of these cancers are diagnosed at an advanced stage and therefore have a low survival rate.
For cancer to be treated effectively, it must be detected at an early stage. That’s why it’s important to pay attention to the first signs and symptoms of this disease. Here are the most common warning signs:
1. Persistent cough and chest pain
Some types of cancer, such as lung cancer and leukemia, can present symptoms similar to those of a cough or bronchitis.
The cough may be recurrent or persistent. Another sign of these cancers is chest pain radiating to the shoulder and down the arm. Furthermore, a persistent or chronic cough, accompanied by hoarseness, can be a sign of thyroid or esophageal cancer.
2. Unusual nodules and lumps
The appearance of unusual nodules and lumps on the abdomen, breasts, groin, testicles, armpits, neck or any other part of the body should be the subject of a medical consultation, especially if these nodules persist for more than three weeks.
The appearance of a lump or swelling in the armpit is one of the most common signs of breast cancer. This type of cancer can also cause unexplained and widespread redness, pain, and swelling of the breast. It is therefore important to pay close attention to this symptom.
3. Abnormal bleeding
Coughing or vomiting blood can be a sign of lung, stomach, or esophageal cancer. Excessive bruising and bleeding may indicate leukemia. Colorectal cancer is characterized by bleeding from the digestive tract. Blood in the stool is a sign of bowel cancer, while blood in the urine is a symptom of a urinary tract infection, which may be caused by kidney or bladder cancer. Additionally, bleeding between periods or after menopause can be a sign of endometrial or uterine cancer.
4. Nail modifications
Various types of cancer, such as lung, liver, or skin cancer, can cause unusual changes in the nails. Loss of fingers or toes is a sign of lung cancer, while dark spots under the nails are a symptom of skin cancer. Pale or white nails can be a result of liver failure, which can be caused by various conditions, including liver cancer. Therefore, your nails are also an important indicator of your health.
5. Sudden weight loss
Sudden and unexplained weight loss is a common symptom of breast and lung cancer. This weight loss usually occurs when the cancer affects the liver and impairs its function, which is to eliminate toxins and regulate appetite. Some digestive cancers, such as colon cancer, can also cause weight loss.
6. Skin changes
Skin changes are usually benign and painless. However, if you notice any skin changes, such as new growths, spots, or sores that do not heal, consult your doctor.
