\u201cThe first thing I asked when my baby was born was, \u2018Is the baby breathing? Is he okay?\u2019<\/p>\n

I had a 12-hour exhausting labor. My vagina out for the world to see.<\/p>\n

While I struggled to get up and cried in pain, a nurse entered my room and asked, \u2018Are you going to breastfeed?\u2019 and latched a painful, angry piranha to my unsuspecting nipples.<\/p>\n

A doctor entered my room and asked, \u2018How many feeds has he had?,\u2019 while I wiped my tears because I was struggling. I couldn\u2019t get the damn piranha to latch. She hadn\u2019t noticed I had been crying and told me she\u2019d be back later to help me. She never came back.<\/p>\n

I met other new mothers, and our questions were always about our babies. About their sleep and their routines. I didn\u2019t even know their names.<\/p>\n

I had 7 appointments. I was asked hundreds of questions. All of them, about my baby.<\/p>\n

I was asked once when I was pregnant, but when that baby left my body, I was no longer asked. Not even I dared to ask myself.<\/p>\n

But if they had asked me how I was, they would have known \u2013 I was struggling. If they asked me how I was doing, they would have known \u2013 I was scared. If they just asked me if I was okay, they would have known \u2013 I wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

I could have spoken up, but it\u2019s not so easy. You have a place in society now. You are a mother now. You\u2019re not meant to dry-heave when you see your baby\u2019s meconium, let alone complain that you aren\u2019t coping. People will tell you you\u2019re lucky to have had a baby and you should be grateful because everything goes quick and who wants to seem ungrateful? Who wants to say that when their baby cries it feels like needles to their head? And they just feel SO lonely.<\/p>\n

But now, you listen to me and you listen good; We are not just a body. We are not just a vessel. We are not just an old life that is discarded once we have served our purpose to make another. We aren\u2019t just so-so\u2019s mom, the invisible woman in the background making everything tick. You are the emotional rock, you are the last kiss goodnight, you are someone\u2019s whole world and if you aren\u2019t coping, if you aren\u2019t happy, no one can be.<\/p>\n

What I\u2019ve learned after three children and never being asked, \u2018how are you doing,\u2019 I raise my hand and I say, \u2018I am not okay, I can\u2019t do this, and I\u2019m not ashamed.\u2019<\/p>\n

We care less about ourselves and that\u2019s evident in the fact that the first question we ever ask after giving birth is, \u2018Is everything ok?\u2019 But we should also be asking, \u2018Am I okay?\u2019 Because when we do that, we give permissions for others to do the same.<\/p>\n

When a baby is born, so is a mother. So, ask us too, and ask us often, \u2018Is everything okay?\u2019 Maybe she will say she\u2019s fine, maybe she won\u2019t. But don\u2019t stop asking, even after her kids have long left the nest.\u201d<\/p>\n
