Knowing what to actually watch for makes a real difference. Here are ten changes doctors recommend getting checked out.

1. A New Lump or Mass
The most well-known sign, and still the most common one. A lump doesn’t have to be painful to matter — in fact, early breast cancer lumps are often painless, hard, and have irregular edges, though not always. Any new lump in the breast or underarm area is worth having examined.

2. Swelling of All or Part of the Breast
Swelling — even without a distinct lump you can feel — can be an early sign, particularly in a type called inflammatory breast cancer, which doesn’t always present as a typical mass.

3. Skin Dimpling or Puckering
Sometimes described as looking like an orange peel (the medical term is peau d’orange), dimpled or pitted skin on the breast can indicate underlying changes worth investigating.

4. Breast or Nipple Pain
Breast pain is usually hormonal and nothing to worry about, especially if it comes and goes with your cycle. Persistent pain localized to one specific spot, unrelated to your period, is the kind worth mentioning to a doctor.

5. Nipple Retraction
A nipple that suddenly turns inward or becomes inverted, when it wasn’t before, is a change worth having evaluated.

6. Redness or Scaliness of the
Nipple or Breast Skin

Skin changes — redness, flaking, scaliness, or a rash-like appearance around the nipple — can sometimes indicate a rare form called Paget’s disease of the breast, in addition to more common causes like eczema or dermatitis.

7. Unusual Nipple Discharge
Discharge other than breast milk — especially if it’s spontaneous (not squeezed out), occurs in only one breast, or is bloody or clear — is worth getting checked, even though most causes of nipple discharge turn out to be benign.

8. Change in Breast Size or Shape
A noticeable, unexplained change in the size or shape of one breast compared to the other — not related to weight change or your menstrual cycle — is a sign doctors take seriously.

9. Thickening or Swelling in Part of the Breast
Distinct from a lump, this is more of a general firmness or thickened feeling in one area, sometimes only noticeable when comparing one breast to the other by touch.

10. Swelling Near the Collarbone or Underarm
Breast cancer can sometimes spread to nearby lymph nodes before a lump is even noticeable in the breast itself, causing swelling near the collarbone or in the armpit.

What To Do If You Notice One of These
Most of these changes turn out to have benign causes — cysts, hormonal fluctuations, infections, or normal variations in breast tissue. None of them mean you have cancer. What they do mean is that it’s worth getting checked rather than waiting to see if it resolves on its own.

A few practical steps:

Get familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel, so you’re more likely to notice a genuine change
Don’t skip your recommended screening mammograms — they can catch changes well before they’re noticeable by touch
See a doctor promptly if you notice any of the signs above, rather than waiting for your next scheduled appointment
Early detection remains one of the biggest factors in successful breast cancer treatment, and most of the time, a quick check turns out to be nothing serious at all.

This post is for general information only and isn’t a substitute for professional medical advice.
