Researchers found that a single small scratch on a pan can release approximately 9,100 microplastic particles.<\/p>\n
If the coating is more damaged (such as with cracks or peeling), the release can reach up to 2.3 million microplastic and nanoplastic particles during the cooking of just one meal.<\/p>\n
What are these particles?<\/p>\n
They are very small particles derived from a material called PTFE (Teflon). These particles belong to a class of chemicals known as PFAS, or \u201cperennial chemicals,\u201d which can remain in the body and the environment for extended periods.<\/p>\n
Research is still underway to better understand the health effects of ingesting these solid particles compared to absorbing the chemicals themselves.<\/p>\n
