Far from being a coincidence, experts point to modern diets as playing a key role in the development of this problem. What many don’t realize is that kidney stones don’t appear overnight: they form slowly , from habits that seem harmless but, over time, silently damage the renal system.

The kidney is one of the body’s most important organs, responsible for filtering toxins and maintaining fluid balance . However, when the diet becomes too rich in certain components—such as sodium, sugars, or animal proteins—the body begins to accumulate substances that crystallize within the urinary tract , giving rise to what are known as kidney stones .

Among the foods that most contribute to their formation are soft drinks and sugary beverages . Their high sugar and sodium content alters the natural composition of urine, causing minerals to concentrate and stick together. The result is an ideal environment for the formation of hard crystals , which over time can develop into kidney stones.

Another major culprit is red meat and processed meats , foods rich in animal protein . When consumed in excess, they raise uric acid levels in the blood, which overloads the kidneys. This type of protein generates waste products that the body must eliminate through the kidneys, and if there is inadequate hydration, these waste products concentrate and form crystals.

Excess salt is another silent enemy. Although many people don’t notice it, a high-sodium diet not only causes water retention but also increases the amount of calcium in urine . This excess calcium can combine with other substances and form kidney stones. Experts recommend reducing salt in meals, avoiding ultra-processed foods, and choosing natural seasonings.

There are also products that, although they seem healthy, should be consumed in moderation. Some examples are peanuts, spinach, and blackberries , foods that contain oxalate , a compound that combines with calcium to form hard crystals. The same is true for protein supplements or shakes that are consumed without control and without enough water: the excess metabolic waste ends up overloading the kidneys.

Fortunately, diet can also be a great ally in preventing kidney stones . The first step is to stay hydrated . Water helps dilute minerals and eliminate waste products that could turn into stones. Drinking between two and three liters a day is essential for keeping your kidneys functioning properly.

Another natural ally is the lemon , as well as other citrus fruits . These fruits contain citrate , a substance that prevents calcium and oxalate from binding together. Incorporating fresh lemon juice or water with citrus slices into your diet can make a big difference. Similarly, fresh fruits and vegetables help balance urine pH , supporting kidney function and reducing the risk of mineral buildup.

Coffee and unsweetened tea , in moderation, can also offer benefits, as they stimulate urine production and help eliminate waste from the body. However, experts warn that everything should be done in moderation: overindulging in these beverages can have the opposite effect.

Ultimately, it’s not about completely eliminating certain foods, but about maintaining a balanced diet and staying well-hydrated every day . Our kidneys work 24 hours a day, filtering everything we ingest. Taking care of them doesn’t require great sacrifices, just awareness and moderation.

Paying attention to what you eat today can prevent problems tomorrow. And although kidney stones are becoming increasingly common, most cases can be prevented with simple changes to your diet and water intake . Your kidneys never rest; protect them before they take their toll.

In recent years, doctors have observed a worrying increase in cases of kidney stones in young people , a condition previously seen primarily in older

[4

post-11966","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news
["GET
